OUR PARISH

The Ukrainian Orthodox Parish of St. Mary the Protectress was formed in 1952 primarily by people from Eastern Ukraine who had undergone the horrors of the famine-genocide of 1932-33, the brutal occupation by the Communist regime, the terrors of war and the uncertainties of emigration to a new land whose official languages were unknown to them.

Led by Fr. Petro Arkhanhelsky, a fellow-émigré, they celebrated their first Service, Vespers, on May 10, 1952 in a hall rented from St. George Anglican Church on Atwater Street in downtown Montreal. They eventually acquired the property on the current location on Rosemount Boulevard and built the lovely Temple.

We have endured many difficulties and dealt with many challenges. Our Lord Jesus has been with us. His Mother Mary, under whose protection the Parish was placed from its beginning, continues to look after us. We have a full liturgical life with Sunday Divine Liturgies sung by a lovely choir, as well as Vespers, Matins and Akathists.

Suffering and uncertainty have led us to place our hope in Divine Providence and we have never been disappointed. Come and see that the Lord is good.

Olga was a very active member of St. George Ukrainian Orthodox Church for over 70 years. She will be remembered for her loving and generous willingness as ”Baba” to always be there for her family. The Funeral was held from J.J. Cardinal Funeral Chapel, 2125 Notre-Dame St., Lachine on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Thence to St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, 24 th Ave., Duff Court, Lachine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Olga’s memory to her much beloved Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. George. ETERNAL MEMORY. In Lachine, April 25, 2020, at the age of 93, Paulina Sawadsky née Dombrowska fell asleep in the Lord after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Zhukiw, Ukraine, predeceased by her beloved husband (Hryhorij Sawadksy) and daughter (Anna Sawadsky) she leaves to mourn her Church family. Thank you to the dedicated staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Centre Hospitalier de Lachine, who treated her with such dignity, warmth and compassion. Due to the constraints surrounding the CoVid-19 pandemic, a private funeral service took place at the J.J. Cardinal Funeral Chapel on Thursday, April 30, followed by interment at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery of St. George in Lachine. Donations in her memory would be greatly appreciated to the Church she loved so much. Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. George, 880 rue St-Antoine, Lachine, Quebec, H8S 1T1ю Khrystos Voskres! Voistynu Voskres! With profound sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Michael Homonko on Monday, May 4, 2020, loving husband, best friend and dancing partner of Alice (Tkacz) for 59 years, treasured Dad to Kathleen (Reid Farrill), Darlene, Christine (Brian Moran) and many cousins, nieces and nephews in the Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, Orangeville, Stoney Creek and Edmonton areas. On first stepping onto Canadian soil at the young age of 10 from the Battoria, the last ship out of Gdansk, six months before the start of World War II, Michael became a proud Canadian of his adopted country. As well, he was a proud member of the class of 1948 at Royal Military College in Kingston but especially so as a Junior Cadet he had the honour to dismiss the parade with Queen Elizabeth, then Princess, in the reviewing stand! While in the Air Force, he flew supplies to Japan during the Korean War and participated in survival exercises in the Alberta wilderness and the Arctic. Michael believed in giving back. He was an active member of St. Sophie’s holding various positions on the Church Council but most of all he was one of the founding members of the Mazeppa Credit Union, now part of Desjardins. After retiring from the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association of Canada he took up golf and co-founded the Pro Duffers. In the winter, curling at Montreal West Curling Club, taking on executive jobs and watching the Habs helped pass the cold months. However, his family was always foremost in his heart. He loved his four girls. They could do no harm. We’ll miss his quiet ways, that special sense of humour but most of all his unconditional love. If you wish to make a donation in Michael’s memory, please consider St. Sophie’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 6520 12th. Avenue, Montreal, Quebec, H1X 3A5, or any other charity of your choice. Till we meet again. Vichnaya Pamyiat. Eternal Memory. Also fallen asleep: Michael Wakulin (1951 – 2020). The family will receive family and friends at Alfred Dallaire, 3254 Bellechassse, Montreal, Tuesday, May 12, 2020, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15pm. The commemoration will take place at 4:00 p.m.

Memory eternal.
